Better understanding, better action

It was essential for us to understand the social and environmental issues we face, and to build a solid foundation in sustainable innovation. We have raised awareness and educated our team on ESG factors through in-depth analysis and expert training. Since 2021, we have carried out annual greenhouse gas (GHG) assessments. This approach enables us to direct our efforts towards meaningful and impactful actions!

SUSTAINABILITY

Circular economy

When you consider that the global circularity index is just 7.2% (CGR 2024 (circularity-gap.world)), it’s important to pull out all the stops to transform waste into valuable resources. Our initiatives go far beyond simple waste sorting and composting. For example, thanks to our initiatives, we manage to recycle an average of 400 metric tons of clay dust per year, diverting it from landfill!

 

SUSTAINABILITY

Renewable energy

Intersand is proud to say that its Canadian production is majorly powered by renewable energy. We’ve also added a solar wall to the exterior of our Boucherville plant, which helps power the plant’s heating and ventilation.

Since 2024, Intersand has been an accredited member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition, an organization that promotes and advances sustainability initiatives in the animal industry. Intersand is one of the organization's accredited members who meet specific sustainability standards.

Our History

Passionate for more than 30 years

Intersand is first and foremost the story of Stéphane Chevigny who, one day, while cleaning his cat’s litter tray, asked himself the question that would change everything: “How can I make this task more pleasant?” From this simple question was born a dream: to create the world’s best cat litter to simplify and enhance litter box cleaning.

It’s also the story of our committed and dedicated employees who, over the years, have believed in this dream and helped make it a success. Our story is the story of a family business whose innovative and inspiring teams develop high-quality animal health and hygiene products that are recognized and loved all over the world.

Workers

1992

While working for the family business Provalcid in Varennes, Stéphane Chevigny launched the litter division, which would later become Intersand. At the time, operations took place in the old family barn, with a single production line and a silo.

1999

To support its growth, the company took flight and left the family nest to settle in Boucherville. Located strategically near the port of Montreal, this marked a giant leap toward the company’s future.

2004

After Canada and Europe, 2004 marks the company’s entry into the Asian market.

2014

The company restructures by creating an executive committee made up of departmental vice presidents.

2015

Our product, OdourLock, wins the Editors’ Stand Out Product award as part of the Editors’ Choice Awards 2014 from Pet Product News magazine.

2017

After years of research, Intersand officially launches its sister company, Laboratoires Blücare, in Boucherville.

2018

Intersand has been recognized as one of Canada’s Best Managed Companies.

2019

Intersand acquires Halliburton’s CPG and its brands.

2020

Despite the global Covid pandemic in 2020, Intersand continues to grow and invests over $35M in the construction of its first ultra-modern U.S. plant. Intersand America Corp is officially launched in Windsor, Colorado.

2020

Intersand inaugurates its brand-new offices in Boucherville, just a few steps from its plant.

2021

Intersand acquires Eco-Solutions, a Quebec-based litter manufacturer in Saint-Alexis.

2022

Intersand acquires the manufacturing assets of VersaPet in Etobicoke, Ontario.

2023

Launch of OdourLock Maxcare and first GHG emissions report across our 5 plants.

2024

In 2024, Intersand begins its largest digital transformation with the implementation of an ERP system across all sites. Over $3M invested in upgrading equipment at the Boucherville plant to support current and future growth.

2024

Intersand becomes a member of the Pet Sustainability Coalition (PSC).

2025

Intersand has been recognized as a Platinum member of Canada’s Best Managed Companies.
